Surrounded by Iceland’s rolling fjords, Reykjavik bursts with traditional Nordic charm and modern Scandinavian cool. This clean and green little city is the world’s most Northern capital, and certainly has its own quirky. This is the first of a series, we will be spotlighting as many cities as we can in Iceland, since Reykjavik is the capital and the biggest, it seems like a good place to start.
1. It will make you more cultured. Reykjavik is a hub for social and artistic chaos, in a good way. Strolling down the streets you will see a variety of amazing things. Whether it be a local Icelandic singer at the Night of Light or the Reykjavik Jazz Festival . Your sure to find something to get you passion going. If you’re a visual person there is plenty of outstanding art work and galleries in the town check out the Center for Icelandic Art.

2. You will not go hungry. If you’re looking for some authentic Icelandic cuisine in a very authentic traditional way you need to head over to the Viking Restaurant Fjorugardurinn, the emphasis is on the Viking Era. The décor is in the Viking style and a true Viking feast is offered with traditional meals served in old-fashioned Viking-style trays. Looking for variety, no problem Reykjavik offers many varieties of cuisine from all over the world. For me the thing that catches my attention are the smaller more intimate places in Reykjavik like Café Roma, with some of the most delicious pastries in the city. Oh and eat a hot dog! Iceland’s most popular restaurant is Bæjarins beztu and that is for a reason, there is no way you can call it a day until you try one.
3. The City is a Party Zone. After a long day of eating it is time to party, the nightlife in the City Explodes and since sometimes the sun literally does not fully set you can party all night long. Listen to live music, dance and have fun. Whether it be the rock sounds of Bar 11, the pumping DJ’s at Batterí, or one of the hottest spots in the city Café Oliver, Reykjavik has you covered.
4. The City is fit. After a night of debauchery and pigging out your going to need to get your but moving soldier and Reykjavik offers you some great ways to burn off those calories. If you’re really wanting to get your blood moving the Reykjavik Marathon is unsurpassed as a huge running event, or if you’re looking to mix it up a little take advantage of the Reykjavik Midnight Run (While the sun is shining.) Looking for something a little more low key take a walk on the Tjornin Lake. Want a choice? you can either relax or sweat it out at the Laugar Spa.
5. Relax some more. Speaking of relaxing, there is plenty of that too. Taking a trip to the Blue Lagoon will surely get rid of many of your stresses and life pains. An awe-inspiring site set in a lava field about half an hour’s drive from the city, and with preternaturally milky blue geothermal sea waters, the steamy Blue Lagoon evokes both magic and myth. It’s the perfect spot for a Viking to ease his weary joints after a stretch of long ship rowing, or for an intrepid tourist to do the same after a busy bout of sightseeing.
6. It is a friendly town. Meet Some People, Icelandic people are generally very nice and friendly. So don’t be shy meet some friends or fall in love.
7. It has a beautiful landscape. It is no secret that Iceland is full of un-expected an interesting sites. Reykjavik, despite being a busy city and a hub for the country, is no exception. Go check out some history with the Hofði House This wooden building became very famous after former presidents, Gorbachev (USSR) and Reagan (USA) had a summit in 1986. It was built in 1909. It is now a hot spot for wedding and events. Almost everywhere you look outside the city there are lakes, lava beds, green fields, and wildlife.
8. Reykjavik is known for being expensive. I guess the old saying stands; you get what you pay for. That is not to say you cannot have a pretty spectacular time for free. Some free things to do in Reykjavik are the “The Pearl”, in Icelandic, it’s “Perlan”. It is one of Reykjavik’s most popular sights and definitely the most unique. Perlan is a large dome made only from glass and steel, offering a home to a freely accessible panoramic viewing platform over Reykjavik that you shouldn’t miss. The unique Hallgrimskirkja Church in Reykjavik is a stunning structure. They also have many free museums that you must go see. Aside from that the town itself is magical even without spending a penny being a part of Reykjavik is a magical experience. Also Mother Nature always gives free shows.
9. It is a sharp dressed town. Reykjavik is known for clothes and fashion. They are unique and rocking.
10. The town is an adventure. Whether it be a Glacier Trek or a tour of a ship, just go. Your life is boring and you’re wasting it. It is time to take life slap it around a bit and enjoy it while it last.
